key Elements: Editing
Editing techniques are really well used in chapter 1 (00:00:00 - (00:06:42) of Baby Driver (Edgar Wright, 2017). We see a steady open to the film, a group driving in a car before they come to a stop on the side of the road. A non-diegetic sound starts playing, however the actor can hear this and matches his movements to the sound. His team in the car get out and swiftly rob a bank, the music starts to pick up. We then get a sequence of around 5 quick shots showing the driver and different parts of the car. The team get back in and the non-diegetic upbeat music starts to play really loud.
Now we start to get into the more rapid sequences, we see 200+ shots in around 3 minutes of film. This really shows us right from the start that the film is going to be quick paced and action packed, not allowing us anytime at all to catch our breath. During these 3 minutes, we see the police chasing the red car with the crew inside, we see the majority of the cuts when the driver uses parts of the car to change direction or when they go around a corner. The editing is really well used as you can see all the actions and movements, making the opening scene so much more interesting.
